We are proud of the 72 month long shows we supported and apologize to the 60 artists who were booked far into the future who's shows cannot now be hosted.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND ARRANGEMENTS by Zoltan A. Tokes

Fifteen years ago, Zoltan Tokes took an interest in Sogetsu, a modern style of Japanese flower arrangement allowing more freedom and experimentation. Still, as tradition goes, the training adhered to rigorous standards. He credits his teacher Madam Eika Fukui, a master of the highest order, recognized for her patience and imagination backed by decades of experience.
“During my training I often drifted away from the classical arrangements and experimented with flowers placed in outrageous settings that created contrast and tension. I became obsessed with incorporating discordant elements such as shredded tires found along the highways (orphans of violence) and their relationship with flowers. Outside of vases, away from branches and leaves, flowers become powerful in new ways.”
Haiku, a form of Japanese poetry, may be defined as a form of moments of ironic drama. Tokes feels the photographs of his flower arrangements have a similar quality; they carry a wonder of the ordinary seen anew. Therefore, one might say that his photographs have a “Haiku” quality.”
At present, Tokes has graduated to the fourth level of Sogetsu Certificates, and has frequently participated in exhibitions at the Japan American Heritage Museum, Zenshuji Temple, and the Los Angeles Arboretum. His photographs have been exhibited regularly at the Hoyt Gallery, University of Southern California.
The Artist is also a professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California and teaches neurobiology. He often uses his photographs to decode how the brain responds to distorted arrangements, exaggerated contrasts and unusual proportions.

“Origins Extinct”

Artist's Statement.

The new millennium, thought to be a period of great happiness or human perfection, during which holiness is meant to prevail, instead has begun as a time of fearful uncertainty marked by heightened intolerance and injustice resulting in multitudes of pointless wars driven by righteousness and posturing. Wars are man-made, and though many people would say some are worth fighting, in truth the only war worth fighting is the one against what we've thoughtlessly wreaked on Mother Earth.

The idea for "Origins Extinct" piqued my consciousness around the time the book, "Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed" by Jared Diamond arrived at bookstores. Diamond explains how many societies would ultimately fail as civilizations by looking out only for their short-term needs without any consideration of their long-term survival. Sound familiar? However, I also learned from Diamond's book that certain societies, Japan being one of them, saw the wisdom in looking out for their children's future and took appropriate steps in insuring the natural resources of their land were protected for the long-term.

At the same time my own exhibit in Japan was approaching, and not certain of what work I would show, by chance I found a pile of old computer chipboards dumped down the hallway from my studio, and auspiciously soon after that a stash of long forgotten gingko leaves in the back of my flat files. Then it all clicked - the Gingko tree is one of the oldest trees on Earth and very sacred for the people of Japan. With "Origins Extinct" I wanted to connect to the reverence the Japanese hold for the Earth and convey their esteem through my cultivated amalgamation of man-made materials and organic elements.

As I took my found objects and started assembling the first pieces for "Origins Extinct" I was faced with the question of how to tie the opposing elements together and convey the frail ecological state our world is now faced with. Keeping with the Japanese motif, I chose the ancient writing style of Kanji for its history and for its powerful symbolism. My intention to reflect the simplicity and balance much needed in everyday life and pay respect to the Japanese way of living in the world rather than just living on the world.

Dear Gallery Artists,

The NELA Second Saturday Artwalk has been in operation for about five years. We have operated as a grass roots, unfunded, volunteer organization. There is no way to monetize the event nor a way to assess the participating galleries a percentage of the looming significant costs that will be assigned by the city for services.
With legal liability a serious issue, MorYork will close at the end of 2011. All shows scheduled in 2012 and henceforth are hereby canceled.
I am deeply sorry that our commitments cannot be fulfilled.

Cacophany - Artist's statement

The theme for this show was dictated solely by the materials. As an assemblage artist, I have always wanted a ruined upright piano for the intricate wooden levers and hammers within. When I found a piano and removed its moving parts, I was left with a large, heavy, useless piece of furniture. As it sat in my studio, I began tinkering with it. The Jangleodeon is the result.

The 45 RPM records are all from the collection of one woman in Schenectady, New York. She bought and played records daily in her youth, and took little care to maintain their quality. I say that to justify my rough use of them here.

The two angel figures stand before wooden harp cases, used to transport the instruments; one is over 100 years old. Having this odd collection of musically related materials and a piano-turned-noisemaker brought the word ‘cacophony’ to mind. Having a September 10th opening - knowing that folks would wake up the next morning on the 10th anniversary of the destruction of the World Trade Center - a raucous cacophony seemed appropriate.

It was stolen recently and although quickly recovered it needed extensive repair to get it up and running again.

The former Safeway store in which the galleries are housed is also the studio of artist Clare Graham , whose amazing sculpture and furniture produced using recycled materials are always on display. Scarred for Life:
Ever since he was a small child with a serious illness, Ted Meyer has mixed art and medical images as a way to understand his experiences. Through his art he highlights the emotional impact of pain and healing on everyday people—patients, families, and medical personnel.

When medical treatments improved his own situation as an adult, Ted began to work with other survivors of traumatic health issues. “Scarred for Life” is a multi-faceted project that includes printing on paper from the subject’s body, interviewing the participants about their experiences, and photographing the process. The resulting, ever-expanding, presentation of monoprints, narratives, and photographs has received press coverage from the New York Times, USA Today and the Chicago Tribune.

“Scarred for Life,” has been exhibited nationally, including at the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Washington, D.C., New York University School of Medicine, Bravard Museum of Art in Melbourne, Florida, the Museum of Art and Culture in New Rochelle, New York, and at Sierra College in Rocklin, California and Biola University in La Mirada, California. Ted has lectured on art and health at Yale University, NYU, and UCLA.

The Artist
Ted Meyer Ted is an artist and designer living in Los Angeles. He earned his Bachelor’s degree at Arizona State University. He is owner of and principal designer at Art Your World, a full-service design studio. He is currently Artist in Residence at UCLA’s Geffen School of Medicine and Visiting Scholar at the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Washington, D.C.

Matt Jones - Recent Experiments in Not Knowing

This exhibition presents a survey of several explorations of thought, but generally coalescing around the belief systems of science and religion, focusing on the point at which common sense and life experience are overruled by faith. As the artist explains:

"There are plenty of examples of ridiculous and impossible phenomena in religion, but lately, I’ve been intrigued by theories and statements made by scientists that transcend rational thinking. And rational thinking is supposed to be the bedrock of scientific inquiry. Specifically, I keep thinking of a Brian Greene quote [author of Elegant Universe] in which, during an interview, the interviewer led him along a line of thought, “A cannonball, when fired from a cannon, has a definite trajectory and velocity. A physicist, if he knew sufficient information, could tell you where the cannonball was going to land. In that same thought, if I threw a dead bird into the air, he could tell you where it was going to land. But if he threw a live bird...” At this point, Brian Greene interrupted him to say, “If he knew sufficient information, the physicist could tell you where it would land. It’s all molecules and it’s all physics.”

Matt Jones was born in New Jersey in 1980 and he received a BA from Dartmouth College in 2002 with majors in Psychology and Studio Art, and received his MFA from Stanford University in 2008. His work has been shown nationally, in group and solo shows in Santa Fe, Chicago, New York, and San Francisco and internationally in Cologne, Germany. He was awarded the Murphy-Cadogan Fellowship in 2007 from the San Francisco Art Commission and the Perspectives on Design Award in 2002 from Dartmouth College. He lives and works in Los Angeles.

Matt Jones is pleased to announce an exhibition of new sculpture, video, and drawings at MorYork Gallery, entitled “Recent Experiments in Not Knowing”. This will be the artist’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles and will be on view March 12th - April 3rd, 2011, with an opening reception coinciding with the NELA Artwalk, on Saturday, March 12th, 6:00PM - 10:00PM.

Amanda Knight - Spaced Out

Amanda Knight is a first generation American of English heritage. She was born in Massachusetts, in 1962, and was greatly relieved at the grand age of 6, when her family moved to the benign climate of California. Her appreciation for art began at a young age while strolling through the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. These visits sparked a passion for art that has never been extinguished. Amanda Knight Majored in the fine arts at Scripps College. She studied all the traditional art forms and explored many non-traditional ones, graduating cum laude in 1984.

After graduating she created a body of paintings while participating in the "functional Art" movement. Knight also expanded her interests to include the restoration of the decorative arts which has had the unexpected benefit of exposure to the techniques and artistry of other cultures, media and eras. She then chose to adopt painting as her primary means of artistic expresion, for oils best expressed the concepts she wished to convey.

Amanda Knight's current oil paintings of trees are to be considered as portraits. Her work depicts the dynamic and complex patterning of each tree. The saturated background color both enhances and separates the trees from their surrounding, thus focussing one's attention on the movement and interplay of the trunks and limbs. The trees depict an almost human body language that inspires the viewer to imagine that perhaps there is more going on than meets the eye.

Egg Tree Egg

Last summer I had a short strange dream about a tree in a nest rather than the other way around. The tiny tree seemed to have come out of a broken eggshell which lay nearby, and the whole thing was high up in a much larger tree.

The dream stuck with me and this “egg tree” steered the work I was doing for this show in a new direction. As a piano gifted by a friend was broken down into smaller bits and woven back together again, the resulting vortexes became nests in search of trees and vice versa. Eggs became light bulbs. Circles and cycles. Chicken to egg. Seed to tree to seed.

Almost all of my materials are recycled, repurposed or given to me by a good friend or family member and often these ingredients dictate important aspects of the finished piece. Autoharps, piano parts and bell jars from an Oklahoma yard sale are here with lifecasts of some of my most loved people. My mom and dad, my two kids and my girlfriend are all here in the nest.

This show is a departure of sorts for me in that it is not my usual crowded environment but more of a collection of individual (yet related) pieces - connected not just by wax and steel strings but by the family and friends who have lent materials, support and their wrinkled faces, hands and feet to make this show possible.

Artist’s Statement

be•longing

“Follow your longing to your belonging,” is something a friend once said to me. For some time I have been meditating on belonging. This year it occurred to me to create work directly relating to my experience of connection.
I searched through my photographs and intuitively chose images that illustrated moments of connectedness. Often these moments were surrounded by torrents of dislocation, but sometimes surrounded by relative calm. I took these images and painted them. Themes surfaced:
A cup, in it’s origin, is a cask, a barrel, a hollow. A kupah is a cave. A kype is a kind of a ship. Cupere is to desire, to long for.
The ladles, cups, and sculptures were retrieved from under the sea, near a library in which was written, “The Place of the Cure of the Soul.” I, of course could not have known that.
To long is to feel long, but also to desire. And to desire is to continue. A ship is a hollow, a cask, a vessel. A vessel is a container; a small vase or urn.
To sail is to be propelled by the wind; the pressure of the unseen against the force of the tangible.
And as for the fruits, I cannot explain the light of the sun hitting the flesh in a certain moment, but I can share the experience through the colors painted. And there is something unseen, and curious, about the shape of the pit of the peach. The seed of the fruit. The empty within the full, which houses the future.

"As a daughter of parents who were both collectors and designers, Erika Marrin was exposed to the art at a very young age. Her initial interest in photography began when she received a IIO camera for her birthday as a child. But eventually other interests, such as music and drama, took the place of photography. It wasn't until in her late teens that she went back to it when she and some friends decided to start a magazine dedicated to local music. Erika didn't consider herself a writer, so she would take pictures. The magazine never really went past the planing stage, but Erika went to take classes at Pasadena City College, then went on to Art Center College of Design where she received her B FA in Photography.

Erika Marrin is a published photographer. Her work can be seen in such books as Greene & Greene: The Passion of the Legacy, by Randell Makinson and Greene and Greene, by Edward Bosley. She is currently working on other architectural projects.

In this show Erika goes back to what most interests her in photography: the still life. She utilizes objects found at flea markets, antique stores or even in her parent's kitchens to create near-abstract compositions of shape, shadow and color."

Biography:
Kathleen was born and raised in the Los Angeles area. Her interest in drawing and painting started at an early age and was influenced by her grandmother, who was a talented, self-taught painter. In 1994 Kathleen returned to school to study applied arts and art history and now holds two Bachelor of Arts degrees one in Art with an emphasis in painting and drawing, the other in Art History both from the University of Southern California. She also holds a Master of Arts degree in Italian Renaissance Art History from Syracuse University, New York. Since completing her MA in 2003, she has focused on making art. She is a member of and exhibit with the Pasadena Society of Art and the Creative Arts Group in Sierra Madre; in addition she participates in a variety of local art fairs and shows.

Artist’s Statement:
A longstanding appreciation of Renaissance and Baroque art has influenced my interest in the still-life genre. In support of this appreciation I spent a year of study in Florence, Italy while attending Syracuse University. Further, the still-life genre interests me not only because of its long history, but also because it provides an unlimited supply of subject matter that can be “set-up” and drawn to tell a story.

For several years I have been combining a variety of organic and non-organic objects in a series of still life compositions, most of which contain a vessel or container the contents of which span the cycle of life and death. The majority of my compositions are executed in graphite on paper. The tactile quality of graphite allows me to build on the nuances of each surface represented by the objects that comprise my compositions. Although the objects change from drawing to drawing, I strive for consistency in developing complex displays that engage the viewer.

Recently I have expanded my portfolio to include paintings of fruit – primarily apples and pears – although my repertoire also includes other varieties of fruit and vegetables. These fruit and vegetable “portraits” interpret common objects colorfully dressed and cheerfully posed. In addition, my work is influenced by the ancient Greek and Roman tradition of “still life” paintings of foodstuffs: fruit, game, and eggs, which were frequently found on the walls of guest quarters. These images provided a visual banquet for their guests and evoked an impression of hospitality and generosity. This ancient tradition is the undertone of my watercolor paintings.

Matt Schodorf is an Ohio native who grew up in Ventura, California.

He documented most of his High School and brief college career with a Nikon FM that rarely left his side. "This work explores how architecture imposes power and hierarchy and how ideologies exist in invisible barriers.
Much of this work responds to the conflict in Iraq and Afganistan, and the ongoing destruction and reconstruction the U.S. is engaged in there. Insurgent warfare requires the paradoxical procedure of destroying and rebuilding amongst civilian populated cities. In my work, I question the use of American military force to reconstruct this region. I am specifically critical of the use of private contractors, engaged on all fronts of the war including fighting, intelligence, and rebuilding, which enables war profiteering. This entanglement of government and the private sector perpetuates the cloud of war and unaccountability in military operations.

Drawing on my past experience as a carpenter/ subcontractor, I use raw building materials, such as concrete, plywood and drywall, to respond to the paradox of insurgent warfare: defending and destroying, destruction and reconstruction."

I was born in Melbourne, Australia, where I grew up surrounded by my father's cameras. Although I hated having my picture taken, I was fascinated with the gadgetry and the sound of the leaf shutter on his old Kowa. After a misspent youth, I returned to school to study photography at R.M.I.T. I worked as a commercial automotive photographer before I met my beautiful wife in the United States, and moved here to be with her in the winter of 2005. I am now known primarily for my digital retouching, and post production work, and have slowly moved away from commercial photography to concentrate mostly on the people and places that have influenced my life. My current project is a series of portraits taken on one of America's last real main streets.

Mission Statement:

Life is ultimately a “gathering”. It is a journey along a path of collected experiences; collected relationships; and collected “things”. The combined influence of all of these elements impose grand and significant impact on our moral being and character, and ultimately defines who we are, who we become and who we are in the end. The joy of this “gathering” is to bring together a collection of relationships, “things” and best of all, to share these visually expressive experiences with others.

Each artist represented has experience and relationship with the other. Each artist also has a common love and appreciation for the other’s diverse talent, skill and visual expression. There is a commonality in the group’s mutual love and appreciation for simple “things” and the opportunity to “re-assemble” and “re-define” materials, as well as “re-juvenating” their internal creative spirits. This endeavor plays out visually in the utilization of materials that have been “gathered” and “collected” and have become new expressions of creative vision and artistic “re-invention”.

Intrigued by the simultaneous ruggedness and vulnerability of children’s bodies, Sylvia Sukop explores the subtle power dynamics between children and the social and natural world around them. Intimate and sometimes provocative unstaged portraits offer open-ended narratives poised on the edge of playfulness and peril. Totaling 50 images, this is the artist's first project since completing an extensive series documenting the life and death of her teenage brother. Focusing on younger subjects, she continues her examination of the inherent fragility of simply being alive and “exposed,” in every sense of the word, even within our most secure circles of family and friends. Every interaction is fraught with questions: Friend or foe? Protector or threat? To trust or to fear? To obey or to defy?

Sylvia Sukop has presented her work as a writer/photographer in galleries, schools and conferences around the country, and in Los Angeles at the Hammer Museum, MOCA, LACMA, and the 18th Street Arts Center. Her awards include the PEN Center USA Rosenthal Fellowship and a Fulbright Fellowship to Germany; grants from The California Endowment and the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs; and residencies at Blue Mountain Center, Atlantic Center for the Arts, and Anderson Ranch Arts Center. A contributor to Flaunt magazine, The Huffington Post, and the journal Exposure, she founded the community-based photography project Boulevard Without Borders, documenting the diverse communities along LA’s Pico Boulevard, and serves as a volunteer tutor with the Posse Foundation. A graduate of Bucknell University and NYU/ICP, she is currently writing a memoir centered on her relationship with her brother Alex, an organic farmer and environmental activist who died at age 19.

Sculptures by Buck Silva or Stories in Search of Storytellers

At their best, stories encapsulate a truth about shared experiences. We need to believe in the possibility that our experiences can be shared. We trust in the existence of a commonality of feeling in relation our way of being in the world. We ground this trust in the knowledge of our participation to shaping the world in which we live. But we can never really know if and to what extent we actually share the feeling of being in the world. We construct and narrate stories and listen to them in an attempt to reaffirm our belief in the possibility of a shared experiential ground where we can meet. We find confirmation in communication.

Buck Silva has stories to tell, actually, stories to release. Her sculptures do not narrate but suggest tantalizing introductions with fragments apparently autobiographical. Familiar word combinations or well-known themes such as the seven deadly sins lead us into the works. But that’s as far as she guides into a terrain where, we sense, the telling of the story may have severe consequences. Have we heard it right? Do we know the definition of the words before we understand what the combinations mean? Do we grasp the rules that guide sense? A judgment about our adequacy lurks in these stories and, we fear, it might be pronounced any minute. The confessional quality of the autobiographical dimension dissolves, as we feel implicated by an accusatory tone echoing between the works. They scan our fears and humiliations and extract suppressed memories that we find uncannily materialized in her sculptures. We strain to complete stories we thought were Silva’s before realizing they are ours, just as much.

Silva reminds us of those voices that still resonate in our minds as if etched in our psyche. We have been coerced to narrate some stories as if they were ours. It seems that we have been selected by the stories, placed and activated by them. The stories may contain us. Latitude: 42° 21' 30" N, Longitude: 71° 03' 37" W is a boat nearly complete but lacking an outer skin. The coordinates place the un-seaworthy vessel in Boston, Silva’s hometown. The structure seems incapable to transport the glass containers arranged from A to Z that surmount it. Each glass pail sports a word signifying confinement. The boat appears to idealize movement so that it will never have to be undertaken. It confirms that the fulfillment of our desires may be what we fear the most.

Brainwash extends the theme of control into repression. The structure consists of two wooden ironing boards, one on top of the tripod that supports it and one on the floor below the legs. Both surfaces have sentences engraved by pyrography. The upper board refers to an accusatory explanation for the failure of a relationship where the speaker, in this case a father, takes no blame. A definition of the word “shadow” appears on the surface of the lower board that appropriately acts like a shadow to the first. “Father” who withholds the power to judge and condemn can “flatten” with words those close to him and reduce them into his imperfect copies.

The poignancy of Unsolicited Advice should resonate with everyone who at any point in life encountered accusations and faced ridicule for failing to perform at prescribed standards. A conical dunce’s cap appears shy and diminutive before the outsized cone of a megaphone that seems ready to overwhelm it with an enormity of decibels. But irony threatens to subvert the established direction of power. The megaphone is merely a bigger dunce’s cap. Moreover, the alcove within which the smaller cone appears strangely recalls the niches where statues of saints are displayed for inspiring emulation among believers. Hence, Silva smirks as she pays homage to quiet endurance.

Natural Selection is as elaborate as it is puzzling. A freestanding steel armature resembles at once a three-storey house with pitched roof and a torso with a corset. The construction contains a horizontal grid surmounted by a network of rising sharp points. It seems that copper disks have rained through the structure, have gone past the grid and gathered in a mesh receptacle near the bottom of the armature. The points have impaled seven of the disks they keep suspended in mid air. The names of the seven deadly sins appear inscribed on these disks while the others remain blank. This complex setting locates a game at once cruel and arbitrary that assigns condemnations at random. A suggested cycle of movement within this “torso-house” guarantees that accusations shall find their chance victims. There is no escape; all shall look forward to their moment in the limelight of abuse.

Silva’s most recent edition of “wearable art” recalls girl-scout sashes decorated with badges denoting series of achievements. The Badger series display, on individual round badges, the artist performing the seven deadly sins. The theme explored in Natural Selection is reiterated here albeit with a lightheartedness that marks an overcoming of domination through accusations. Guilt is the catalyst that enables pleasure to be transformed into sin. Badger, then, takes on aspects of an invisible armor that works by rendering accusatory badgering ineffective.

Silva’s sculptures do not tell as much as they attract stories. She is interested in the stories they kindle and catch. There may be as many ways of telling the stories that Silva introduces with her works, as there are viewers who smile and nod before them.

Yesterday I put my cell phone to good use and I snapped a few shots during the installation. Great visual experiment with Doron's art. It looks like a scene from "Avatar".
